You can check which version of IE you have by clicking Help, then selecting About Internet Explorer from the drop-down menu. A little window will pop up with information about the program and should say Internet Explorer 8.
Also, just as another way for you to access your mail easily, you might want to check out Windows Live Mail (the desktop client). It works like other desktop clients and pulls your e-mail from your online Windows Hotmail and Live accounts. By using this, you don't have to actually open a browser and surf around for your e-mail, it's all downloaded right into the client. Here's a link to more info and the download:
