I'm going to have to disagree with Shawn here. Although it would work whichever order you installed them, my recommendation is to install SP2 first (and do so from a standalone version) and then install IE8. I would also install Silverlight - there are some areas on the MS website which require this to be installed.

Should you at some stage decide to do a fresh install of your OS, then I would definitely install SP2 first. It is the nearest thing that you can get to a version of Vista with SP2 preintegrated. You can then install your other updates in any order you choose.
