Greetings Solideye,
The key ports entry means it can't make a connection to the Messenger servers. That said, I
would uninstall (not just disable) Norton as a starting point as even disabled, it has been
known to block network connectivity.
Also, does Internet Explorer actually work and allow you to browse web sites? Both Messenger
and Windows Update will use the same methods as IE to attempt connections, so IE actually
working is essential for these functions in Windows to work.
To be honest, if you've really just re-installed Windows by resetting back to the factory
install, you may just want to do so again. However, this time test each product as you
install it to verify it works and you may be able to isolate what specifically is causing
your issue. Additionally, if you don't necessarily want to reinstall again, you might find
System Restore useful to simply undo changes on a per day basis (you'll find this in the
Vista start menu).
