I want to thank you for all of your help.
I went ahead and installed service pack 2. Everything seems great with the graphics and I am able to use the most recent driver for my card. The games that were giving me trouble are running at their maximum settings. DX 10.1 with Vista SP2 is really incredible and it is nice to be able to take advantage of it as it was designed.
