For months I have been unable to use the update service either automatic or
manual on my Vista laptop. Every attempt ended up with the 80072efd error. I
have tried all of the fixes on offer to no avail.
TODAY I CRACKED IT!!!
It turned out that I had User Account Control (UAC) set on, as recommended
by Microsoft and presumably set by default. I had never heard of it but it
appears to be one of the new facilities in Vista. Anyway I turned it off and
suddenly it all works. It found 62 updates which took about an hour and a
half to download and install and it all went through without a hitch.
So if you are having the dreaded 80072edf error give it a try.
In Control Panel click User Accounts, click User Accounts again, click Turn
User Account Control On or Off, delete the tick from the box and click OK.
There are dire warnings about switching this off so I will need to do more
research to find a way of telling UAC to let some things through so that I
can switch it back on again.
