Thanks for the suggestions.

I did have Norton Systemworks installed, but I had uninstalled it before I
tried the upgrade. I have been through and removed most things that could
even possibly cause problems...almost nothing left!

I have tried going into Safe mode, but the Vista Upgrade is disabled and
says it cannot be run from Safe mode.

So I am having to try a clean install from Safe mode instead.

We'll see.
