1) What manufacturer forces you to do anything? You will be able to buy XP
for a long while yet, if you were so inclined.
2) How is buying a new PC with Vista less environmentally friendly than
buying a new PC with XP?

Why do you want/need to port 32-bit drivers to 64-bit? Vista comes in both
32 and 64-bit variants and with a bigger-than-ever library of drivers. If
the drivers you need aren't there you can approach the hardware
manufacturers. If they don't support your hardware under Vista then don't
buy it.
