Thanks you very much for the good advice! I got the tool from
Symantec and it successfully removed all their stuff. Right now AVG
Anti-Virus Free Edition is scanning the computer. :-)
Hopefully after the scan the I can get rid of that Red shield with the
red X. The little old lady that owns this laptop has a phobia about
red Xs anywhere on her machine.
