I had the same problem. I was installing Vista 64bits and it did not
pass the "a required cd/dvd..." stuff. Tried several things, drivers,
etc, finally worked it around by trying a very old DVD-ROM drive (a
toshiba SD-M1712). Vista installed flawlessly with the older drive.
It did not install with a NEC-3540 drive. It seems some NEC drives are
not supported by the Windows Vista 64bits installation software.
Probably other drives won't work too.
After installation it worked without problems with the NEC drive, I
looked into the "drive file details" and is is just the regular
"cdrom.sys" in the driver files. It must be a bug or somthing.
