This is much more serious than just not permitting Windows Defender to
update its definitions. When the problem occurs, Windows Update can't
find any updates...including security-based updates. I just checked the
log and found that it found no updates, including the one that has been
available since 4/27/07.

After following the procedure outline in the KB article, not only did
Windows Defender update its definitions, but Windows Update miraculously
found the cumulative update for the 64 bit Media Center which had been
available for 5 days. I checked the log before and it found no updates
for the past 5 days. In fact it found no updates in the latter half of
April. :-(

I think the term Microsoft Security is an oxymoron.
