Disk Activity BEFORE Logging on

I generally switch my PC on when I get up, then go off and make a cup
of cofee and come back to complete the log-on when I'm ready.

I have Vista Home Premium - booted via BootitNG.

Very often, when I come back to the machine, the disk is undergoing a
great deal of activity - even though I have not yet entered my
password to Log on.

I do have indexing switched on - but as I haven't actually entered
Vista yet, surely that can't be active??

Obviously as I am not in the O/S yet, I can't do any diagnostic work
such as checking task manager etc.

What on earth can it be doing??
