what happens if you type in the windows explorer window the following:

\\COMPUTERNAME

where computer name is the name of the vista computer?

You should see some things there, try it from the xp machine and try it
again from the vista machine (yes to see if it sees itself).

Do you have some firewall that may be blocking something?
In vista it has a yello information bar at some point that asks you if you
want to use autodiscovery..
did you do that?

is this a newtwork with static IP addresses or do you have a router that
uses DHCP?
