OK - Here we go - Problem solved (sort of)
I have no idea what the problem was. I tried everything suggested on these
boards. Due to another problem with my laptop, I sent it back and got a brand
new machine, and still had the same problem.
Eventually I downloaded windows Live Mail Desktop, it replaces the useless
Windows Mail and does actually work. In fact it seems quite a good bit of kit.
I know this doesn't help sort out the fault, but at least it now has me up
and running
