Hmmm... I saw a page at

about installing from USB, so I thought someone might be able to give
a pointer on extrapolating that to installing from (maybe) a small
FAT32 partition on my hard drive.
I'm going to try making a copy of the Vista DVD on a friend's DVD-R,
and see if that reads.
