Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection. Beside that,
McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail.

If you do not have Norton or McAfee installed, or any other antivirus program with it's email scanning turned on then you might want to reset Windows Mail. I would recommend to switch to Windows Live Mail Beta. It is a lot less likely to be corrupted. See this link below for both. Windows Live Mail Beta is at the top under Notes.
