wait....

you are not using the best virtual machine there is through! I don't like
VPC at all.. especially for Linux!

Try vmware server that is free from www.vmware.com
and install the vmware tools inside ubuntu...

Or you can download the free VMWARE PLAYER and then download a ready-made
virtual disk appliance that is ubuntu...

that way you wont have to install ubuntu and that virtual appliance has the
vmware tools preinstalled!

if you have a fast pc and lots of ram and you maximize the window to full
desktop the quality is good.. you cant even tell if its a normal install or
not...

ok there is no 3d support in VM so beryl and such stuff are not possible..
but thats a general limitation of current virtual machine technology ...
