Whatever you decide, you'll get the most out of Vista if you don't make it
an 'either / or' situation. If you want to try out Vista, then my suggestion
would be to keep your copy of XP running too. If you put all your eggs into
the proverbial Vista basket, then you may well run into with compatibility
issues for some of your favourite programs, and regret it.

Main differences between Premium and Basic are the media related programs -
MediaCenter, Movie Maker, DVD Maker etc which are absent in Basic. Worth
hanging out for the Premium if and when you can afford it imho.
