Hi Don,
This is just a temporary icon for Windows Mail to alert you of new messages when Windows Mail is open and will normally go away as soon as you look at the new messages. Windows Mail does not have a tray icon for notification that allows Windows Mail to be minimized to the tray icon instead of the taskbar. If you want to add one, see this link for how.
