They're XP Home . . . but since I can't even get the two Vista
computers to share I haven't even started trying to bring these in to
the network.

The Network Location Type has been Private from the start.
I did follow the second link you provided, and got to the point of
"Activating an Account Properly for Network Access" - guessing that
Vista won't care that I have password protection off, I figured I'd
best try setting up the Guest account to handle sharing . . . but when
I run the "net user" command, I get
"System error 5 has occurred."
"Access is denied."
I'm back to exactly where I started. What in the world does this
mean?
