I've just tried scannow and it didnt find any system file errors. My bios does support legacy usb so I'll try playing around with the drivers in device manager.
One worrying thing is that I've just built a new system using vista x64 home premium with a slightly different mobo and it doesnt give me any bsods so I'm starting to think its a more serious problem with the model of mobo im using (xfx 680i lt sli).
I retrieved the stop error code from the bsod if that will help at all. 0x7e, which seems to be quite generic from google searches.
