THE biggest technology upgrade to the internet in more than 20 years will be finalised this week, preparing the World Wide Web for an explosion of new growth.

The landmark move to the networking technology upgrade, known as IP Version 6 (IPv6), will open the door for billions more devices to be connected to the internet.

In turn, this will trigger a boom on top of the $2.4 trillion worth of commerce and banking transactions already carried out on the internet.

The new system is one several initiatives to be signed off at the 30th meeting of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers in Los Angeles, which started yesterday.
