Ben,

In file sharing, Windows Vista is much like Windows XP, in that it has a
multitude of settings which give it versatility to fit many different network
scenarios.

Is the other computer XP Pro with Simple File Sharing, with Advanced File
Sharing and only using Guest authentication, or AFS with a non-Guest account?
You should decide that, then setup the Vista computer similarly.
