In my humble opinion ...

If your laptop is to stay where it is and you are going away, sleep mode is
perfectly appropriate for any amount of time. If the laptop is going to
move, hibernation mode is the minimum acceptable state for the computer to
be in.

The battery should stay where it is, since newer chargers and laptops won't
overcharge the battery. Most offer a stand-by or trickle mode when the
battery is fully charged. IBM laptops will actually "exercise" the battery,
occasionally letting the charge run down a bit and then topping it back up
again.
