Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "download space." If you mean
hard drive space, what is uses is only temporary, and not very much.

Anything you do on a computer uses up something. If you can get the
same results you want with a real radio, you will improve performance
on the computer. But the only significant issue is how much you
improve it, and whether that amount is even noticeable. For most
people, any performance difference is probably so slight that it would
be unnoticeable. But only you can answer the question in your case.
By the way, I sometimes do it too, and I've never noticed any hit in
performance.
