All has turned out well. By luck, discovered that Vista auto-update had been
trying to send and instal an update to my internal modem drivers, but this
had failed in midstride. All of this, of course, Vista does in the
background without displaying any info while it is doing so. Staynig on the
interenet, wasting time, helped; and eventually Vista found the error and
redid or undid the update.
Still, email connection continued to fail, until, from a hint from Gary, I
removed all accounts in WinMail, restarted and created an account (now with
the correct details). Until ALL accounts had been deleted, any attempt to
create a new account either would not disclose the server tab or would cause
WinMail to crash.
