I have to install Messenger (which I have no use for), just to
change the displayed name in Windows Live Mail?
This seems like a blunder.

Second that. Right now it's not possible to customized it from Windows
Live Mail. So the easiest way is to use a shorter nick name in
Messenger. If you want to keep that long name, please use it as your
personal message, which you can modify from Messenger's
Tools/Options/Personal/Display Name/Type a personal message for your
contacts to see. That way you keep your display name short in Mail but
long in Messenger. Hope that helps.
