I hope you are at least inspecting what they are doing,
e.g. using Task Manager's Processes tab and delaying
your killing spree if there is any activity (especially I/O activity)
associated with them? You may have to use the View menu
to add additional statistics; otherwise use Process Explorer.

For example, apparently WLM still has some kind of compaction
procedure which may operate *after* you close it. Killing it
in the middle of that might result in corrupting whatever files
it would have been updating. Etc.

In that scenario I imagine what might be happening is that
you have reached the limit of the number of closes before
the cleanup procedure gets invoked so it starts doing its thing
in the background under the closing task. So then if you
terminate it prematurely I suspect what could happen is that
you would just see the same thing the next time until you
a) allow the cleanup procedure to complete or b) disable
the cleanup procedure (e.g. in the Maintenance dialog
before closing the application.)

FWIW I have yet to see either feature in effect,
so I don't know exactly what you can see
and the above is just (educated) speculation.
