Message Rules

When I try to set up a message rules for several contacts I add them from
the contacts book. However the contact 'Fred Bloggs' has an email address
'fbloggs@xxxxxx' and selecting him places the email address, rather
than the contact name, into the rule. As the message is received from Fred
Bloggs, the rule is not applied.
I have hundreds of contacts from a variety of organisations and don't want
to have to type these in manually. Am I doing something daft?
