The XP volsnap.sys (VSS driver) will delete Vista's system restore points,
file previous versions, backups, Complete PC Backup files (if online), and
anything else that Vista's volsnap.sys was used to take snapshots. This
happens during the XP boot up. Volsnap.sys enumerates VSS related files
during boot across the entire system. The XP version sees the enhanced
Vista VSS files as incompatible (corrupted) and deletes them to protect the
user from attempting to restore from a file or backup. Booting into Vista
does not do the same thing to XP because Vista knows about XP.
It is a bad idea to dual boot XP and Vista in a production system since
booting into XP destroys Vista's recovery files.
