is onecare enviromentally friendly?

having just renewed my subscription by purchasing a new onecare box
(complete with DVD + instructions + plastic box) because it was 50% cheaper
than by renewing online with microsoft. I have realised that all I needed
was the 25 figure number in the box not all the other stuff.
Why can't microsoft make a system that allows you to purchase the 25 figure
number (similar to the mobile phone top ups used in the UK). this would
allow the user to simplify the renewal procedure and also allowing microsoft
to not produce the unused DVD's, plastic boxes and other stuff.
any thoughts!
