What soundcard do you have?
I had this problem with my Creative X-Fi until I installed all the extras on
the setup disk.
All speakers worked fine under 'test mode' but would only play mp3's etc
from the front.
(The guys that built my PC had just installed the basic drivers)
I had to enable 'CMSS' (Surround Sound) to get my rear speakers working.
If it's not Creative....then...uh...I don't know.
