The only way to do it without the aid of 3rd-party software is to open
regedit, navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and delete the .001 key (or whatever
extension you want to unassociate). It then requires a reboot to lose the
icon. Not for the faint-hearted. It's what I've done before finding this
thread but I think I'll be checking out the software option in future.
