That's not the way you're supposed to remove old messages.
This works for some similar problems, so download and install it
with Windows Mail not running to see if it helps you:

If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or the 64-bit
version, try the 32-bit version first.
I don't know if it will delete the names of the deleted files, but it
should at least make it possible to delete them.
