Passport Id's were required for Hotmail quite a few years ago. Live ID's replaced the Passport nomenclature also quite some time
ago...thus unlikely a reason for your problem.

It would be helpful if you could provide some of the basic info on your system
- o/s, email client version, pop3 vs http, isp, error messages
