As a quick test to see if the drive has died, try using a bootable CD/DVD
such as your Vista DVD (if you have a full retail copy), an XP install CD,
or a rescue CD such as Knoppix. You may need to change the boot order in
the BIOS to optical drive first if it isn't set that way already.

If the computer will not boot from a known-working, known-bootable CD then
the drive itself has probably died. This is not uncommon, particularly on
laptops. In that case, contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support for
repair/replacement.
