Gordon,
This is an interesting problem. We have not seen anything like that here.
Some more information would help.
1. If you reboot the computer and try doing this without any other
applications running do you see the same behavior (wondering if it is
related to memory or processor usage)
2. Is Windows Live Photo Gallery maximized when you see this?
3. If you click and drag a box around some thumbnails do they show up?
4. Can you attach a dxdiag report to your post? (Start Menu -> Run. Enter
'dxdiag'. Save the information to a file)
Let me know what you can find out.
