My problem symptom starts right there at the prompt.
If I hover the mouse pointer, especially over the No button,
the prompt goes into an hourglass, never to return.
That's when one instance of the TM I/O Other Bytes 16
symptom state starts. However, I have seen it happening
independently of doing a close too. So for me at least
that loop is the more general problem which causes
the described symptom and other "hangs" as well.

Not immediately? It may be doing some other cleanup
before reaching the prompt state. You could use TM
to check what it is doing then too.

I have never seen that symptom. If it occurs frequently
I would use ProcMon to get more details about what
is in use and by what. Alternativey if you identify only
the object which is in contention you could get a better idea
of the holders of the object by using Process Explorer
and doing a Ctrl-F Find for its handles. You may find
via ProcMon also that there are some hidden diagnostics
being saved somewhere.
