I certainly disconnected this firewire device on loading Vista but i probably did not disconnect all external devices usb etc when installing this OS. That would also explain the absolute age it takes to boot up compared to XP. I think I may go ahead and do what you say onto a clean sata drive Having disconnected my other drives when doing this.
