You are doing nothing wrong. Creative has chosen NOT to support Vista with any of their current cards. They threatened one of the regular posters on their website forums, Danielk with a lawsuit is he didn't stop making drivers for Creative audio cards that worked with windows Vista. They stated that it was THEIR intellectual property and if they chose not to support Vista with any of their current cards so that everyone that had Vista had to buy the soon to be released XFi-2 cardsthat was their business decision to make.
Think I'm lying? Go to their website and check out the forums there. Heck, I'll make it easy for you.
Windows Vista - Creative Labs
Some folks say their cards work just fine, but when you ask them about the advanced sound features that most folks buy Creative for they get the brook trout look on their face and say, "Huh?" i just use mine with 2 speakers. What is CMSS? I just use headphones, ect........... What did you download anyways? 2.15.0006?
Check this thread from their forums out:

The bottom line is that unless you can find some Danielk drivers, or make your own, you WON'T get that card to work like it is supposed to and Creative doesn't give a big fat rats butt. they expect you and everyone else in the world to pony up and buy the "new card" when it comes out.
Wanna know what folks think of the "new" card? Try this one. Sit down, kick your shoes off and get yourself a cold beverage though if you want to read the whole thread.

I took my new XFi ExtremeGamer Fatality Pro card back to the store and got my money back on Sunday.
But having said all that lol, RoadRage, here on this forum found a solution that works for him. I wasn't willing to bet 150 bucks that it would work for me. You can find that one here:
