Aha! Problem solved - I think.
Should've looked at previous posts on this forum more closely. One post about issues with color profiles contained the solution. I didn't see the connection because I had been having the problem with old scanned-in B/W images.
The solution is not in settings for WPG, but in the setting for the default color profile Check out:
