The aspect ratio is the width/height of the monitor. 4/3 (800x600 etc.) for regular monitors and 16/9 for widescreen monitors. When video or pics are produced at one aspect ratio and viewed at another they can look very odd. This is why viewing a widescreen movie on a 4/3 tv or monitor shows a blank area top and bottom of the screen.
