I found out its the sound card that came with my new HP pavilion laptop. My wifes Vista computer has the "what you hear" option and works quite well, but I found out this sound card does not have the option to record from its own audio! I made a dual boot of XP and Linux and can not get the what you hear option in either of those OS either.

Oh well, sucks to I bought this HP specifically for video and sound editing as it is an entertainment PC, but they shafted me on a crappy sound card.
I bought my system primarily for my video and sound hobby and I was initially dissapointed with this aspect too but with Audacity and some tweaking I managed to record "what I hear". Not that sound off the net is usually the best quality to record I've also come across lots of royalty free websites full of sound beds and FX. One door clsing opens others...
