strange but I got it after
1. adding a local admin account with the same name and password with the
domain admin ID
2. the domain server still can not see any shares
3. checked sharing on c: and attempted to make c$ accessible by
administrators
4 vista complained about c$ already shared,
5 tried again joining the domain and failed for wizard as well as manual one
6 checked shares form server and found c$ etc on the pc
7. tried joining the domain manually by specifying abc instead of abc.local
it worked at this point
the abc.local does have an abbreviation as abc.
