Greetings Louise,
This is a really lousy suggestion I admit, but generally these problems can be caused by
network issues. Guiding you through them will be painful and probably not very fun.
Instead, you might just want to try another product for voice/video like Skype
(
www.skype.com) and see what your results are with that application.
