I am fairly certain that the Kapersky, AVG, Alvira and Comodo virus checkers
all cope with POP3 server communications quite adequately. Perhaps its the
vendors that have a problem with POP3 communications who are inclined to say
that its not necessary.
Also if you remove WLM via ControlPanel->Add remove Programs (XP) it does
NOT remove your mail accounts, contacts or folders - although I think it
should offer the option of so doing.
