What you can do is to change the presentation style from a vertical button
stack to a horizontal icon bar (less fattening too).
You do this by clicking the miniscule triangle at the top of the stack. I'm
guessing that you are accidently clicking the Messenger button when you want
Newsgroups.
Because an icon is much smaller than a button one might intuitively think
that it would be easier to miss. My experience is that I never click the
messenger icon by mistake, whereas I was always mistakenly clicking the
messenger button.
