Yes, you do have a user account. All true multi-user operating systems -
Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista, OS X, Unix/Linus - have user accounts whether
one person uses the computer or 100 people do. There will be a link to your
user account's main directory -
C:\Users\whatever-your-username-is

and its child directories - Documents, Pictures, Downloads, Music - on your
Start Menu. Use it to see your directories. Now try saving to your user's
Downloads folder.

You can manage the user accounts on your computer from the User Accounts
applet in Control Panel. You always want:

1. A Standard User account for your regular work.
2. An Administrator account for when a task needs elevation.

When you create the additional user account, it will show up on the Welcome
Screen. If you want to go back to booting directly to the Desktop (which is
probably what you do now and why you think you don't have a user account),
you can. The instructions at this link work for both XP and Vista:

Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm

If you still don't understand this, have a knowledgeable friend (someone who
is really knowledgeable and not just saying they are) or a family member
come over and show you.
