sfc / scannow does produce an enormous log ... but nothing of value
SFC is the "System File Checker", and it does work - IF you have one or more corrupted/missing Windows System files. It never has and never will fix a corrupted registry. Only a System Restore can do that.
And what stripped down version of Vista are you installing in 30 minutes? I've installed Vista over that past year onto more computers than I care to remember, and to date my record installation time is a little over an hour. Now, with the recent relase of Vista SP1, an additional hour is added to that installation time.
