If I remember correctly Vista has/had problems with messing up metadata. I
am not sure if this was ever fixed. I have only heard of the problem, never
heard of a fix. I would suggest that A) Make sure Vista has all of the
updates installed. B) If that doesn't fix the problem use something else to
mess with the metadata. Fixed or not I will NOT use Vista to edit the
metadata for any file, music, photo or video. If Microsoft couldn't be
bothered to get this right out of the gate they don't get a second chance
with something this important.

There are a number of good free metadata editors. Take a look for PhotoMe a
very nice and very powerful program that is free and it shows more metadata
than anything I have seen. Another option is to use Bridge which comes with
Photoshop.
