I'm not even quite sure what I should be asking here -- if you need more
info from me, please ask. I'm not sure I even have the right name for the
thing. But right now I have no easy way to move files about unless I am
doing it from inside a program. I have tried the view options on the bar and
have searched help to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Barb,
Open Computer > top panel, click ORGANIZE > popup window, click Layout > click Navigation Pane
You have your nav.pane back.
